What RUO (Research Use Only) means
RUO is a classification for material intended solely for research purposes. We explain what it means in practice and how it differs from a medicine, a supplement and a medical device.
RUO stands for Research Use Only. It is a classification that defines the permitted purpose of a material: research and laboratory work. Material marked RUO is not intended for use in humans or animals, nor for clinical, diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
What RUO means in practice
- The material is intended solely for research conducted under laboratory conditions.
- It is not intended for consumption or administration to humans or animals.
- It is not intended for diagnostics or clinical applications.
- Responsibility for lawful use consistent with that purpose rests with the researcher.
How RUO differs from a medicine, a supplement and a medical device
Medicines and medicinal products are subject to registration and pharmaceutical supervision, dietary supplements to food law, and medical devices to device regulations. RUO material falls into none of these categories: it is not a medicine, a medicinal product, a dietary supplement or a medical device. Its role is to support research, not to be used in humans.
Why the classification matters
Correct labelling clarifies responsibility, supports regulatory compliance and states plainly what the material is and is not intended for. Treating an RUO reagent in line with its classification is the foundation of sound and lawful research work.
How to recognise RUO material
The research purpose should be evident from the label, the product description and the documentation. With us, every batch has a certificate of analysis (COA), and the RUO status is stated explicitly - in the description, in the terms and conditions, and at checkout.
